My pregnant body showed its age
As I wrote to you on flowered pages
Long after you were born you nursed
On top of pillows you quenched your thirst
Content to know that just to be
Was just enough to fill your needs
If only that was something you could see
How I wish that you could see
How our life flowed so peacefully
How I wish that you could see
The way I held you sacredly
We tore your home in half and how I tried
To grow a brand new one together
Went everywhere with you in tow
A little girl that could never know
How I smiled along with the other moms
In a world I never did belong
If only that was something you could see
How I wish that you could see
How I stroked you while asleep
How I wish that you could see
The dreams I held for you and me
We grew so far apart we’re ripping at the seams
Traded all our time for cyber pages
You left for a house where the grass looked green
I helped you take away all the memories
Nights I roam in your room with empty shelves
Stare at the walls for what they might tell
If only that was something you could see
How I wish that you could see
The things you want won’t fill your needs
How I wish that you could see
What your closed heart has done to me
If only you could feel the connection
Between your words and what they do
How I wish that you could take in my affection
And know how much there is to lose
Searched so long to find you in the dark
Reached for you across some far-gone distance
You looked through me with vacant eyes
I stopped trying to compromise
Walked on eggshells ’til I found a way
To heal your life and keep you safe
If only that was something you could see
How I wish that you could see
The source of happiness you seek
How I wish that you could see
What’s blind to you but clear to me
How I wish that you could see
Just how different life could be
How I wish that you could see
The love for you that lives in me
How I want for you, how I long for you
How I wish that you could see
