Decent Shelter (song for Habitat for Humanity)

© 2011 Debra Alt, Jeff Fuller, and Steve Lazrove

      03_sample.mp3

From where I sit and what I see from the comfort of my easy chair
Every corner of this blessed world cries out for love, hope and repair
The question always comes down to, what can one single person do?
You have to pick somewhere to start, Find the thing that moves your heart

Chorus:

We all need decent shelter, a place to live
A house, a home to call our own
A roof, and walls around to keep us safe and warm
Windows to let the light shine in
A house, a home to call our own
Reaching out to our communities, framing houses, one home at a time
All these hands and hearts and families, building meaning into our lives
So many people really need the kind of help that we can bring
Pick up a hammer and a prayer, that’s what it means to really care

Chorus:

We all need decent shelter ….
I’m so grateful to have all the things I do
Loved ones and a house to come home to
I want to be part of what’s rebuilding our humanity
In giving there’s so much to receive

Chorus:

We all need decent shelter….

A Change of Heart

      07_sample.mp3

I’ve loved you as I’ve loved no other, you’re the anchor for my dreams
I barely noticed as you slowly closed the door and slipped away from me
I long to stay beside you, my darling, where else would I be

Chorus:

If I were to sing, sing to you softly
A song of love that’s pure right from the start
Would those sounds be so sweet and clear
For you to have a change of heart

You wear pride and power like a suit of armor, how I wish you’d take a look
At all the ways that I have always been there, yet you close me like a book
Your answers come so quickly, they nearly take my breath away

[Repeat chorus]

Bridge:

You tell me that you hear me, hear every word I say
But how can you be listening while you’re turning me away

I’ll keep trying while the sun’s still shining, I can’t seem to let you go
With a glimmer of a chance you’ll open, I’ll hold onto that hope
I know I can help you to remember those days when all our time stood still

Chorus:

If I were to sing, sing to you softly
A song of love that’s pure right from the start
Would those sounds be so sweet and clear, could my voice erase all your fears
For you to have a change of heart,
Will you have a change of heart

Smile Blues

I don’t believe the smile you’re showin’ tonight
I can see it in your eyes somethin’s not right
I’ve never seen it before the smile you’re showin’ tonight

Whatever happened to those eyes that shined ever true
The light went right on through those ol’ baby blues
I know what I’m missin’, the eyes that shined ever true

You’re holdin’ me close but I feel only chill in the air
I’m right here in your arms but it just don’ seem like you care
Your touch may be sweet but I feel only chill in the air

You talk all night long but you don’t say a word to me
Tellin’ yesterday tales but not what tomorrow will bring
You rave on and on but you don’t say a word to me

I see you lookin’ at a lady with eyes that used to shine for me
I see you walkin’ with a lady just as close as you can be
You’re smilin’ at that lady with a smile that used to smile for me

Your leavin’ in the morning is bound to make me sad all day
You look as if you can’t wait to go on your way
That ol’ sun may be shining but I’m bound to be sad all day

I’ll soon be on my way just as far away as I can go
Where I won’t see any trace of the love that I used to know
It’s all I can do, go as far away as I can go

So don’t try and sell me the smile you’re showin’ tonight
And don’t you start lying by saying we’re doing all right
I’ve never seen it before, the smile you’re showing me tonight

Where New England Begins

Where New England Begins

      06_sample.mp3

I was a single city girl just following her heart
Had enough of urban life, out to make a brand new start
Something fresher, cleaner, kinder, more air beneath my wings
Loaded up my car and little girl with all our things
I set out to find where New England begins

New England begins where the steeples and the greens
Are proudly claimed by landmark towns
New England begins as the car horns and the crowds
Finally fade away and settle down

New England begins where the city lines get blurred
Where the wetlands and marinas hug the shore
New England begins where the church bells can be heard
While you’re chatting with the folks that live next door

Pumpkins on our front porch, kids playing in the snow
In the community that’s welcomed me, our roots begin to grow
Made new friends at school bus stops with our coffee mugs in hand
Days are sweet and full here, Connecticut’s where I am
There’s a way of life where New England begins

New England begins with fields and roadside stands
With Husky banners waving Husky pride
New England begins where the Sox and Yankee fans
Can be found together cheering side by side

New England begins where the walls are made of stone
And the autumn reds and yellows are aflame
New England begins where the rivers weave their way
To the Sound on a long midsummer’s day
My home is where New England begins
Connecticut is where New England begins

The Breath

The breath fills me and heals me

And when drawn slowly

Reminds me of everything

I need to know

The Nature of Choice

The nature of choice

Brings up questions of free will, destiny

How it is one comes to a point of

Making a choice

Some falter at crossroads

Others relish the unknown paths ahead

Always momentum takes hold

And shifts in motion, direction occur

Seeming to be

The crux of the nature of life

These infinitesimal specks

Multitude of moments

Of time turned to choices

Into puddles of reality

That evaporate in time

For the next sequence

Stretches of plotted time

On a spectrum marked

By events and dates

Flowing from choices and the hands of God

After a particularly unconscious choice

The bitter aftertaste lingers

Accumulation eventually recedes unconsciousness

Sometimes too late though

For all intents and purposes

An effective quality of life

Some we meet offer no choice

But connection

Truly beyond our own doing

Acting on our own behalf

To be left in the wake of the cosmic sea

Sinking, swimming, diving, flowing,

Directionless for a while

Until veils lift

Revealing horizons of choices

Along the way

A search to separate them from the strain of a life

Worth leading

Great effort to soften the blow of their hovering needs

Their hint of impact

It has begun and as yet

With only a conceivable end in sight

The heart, in all its nobility,

Brings forth messages

Often draped in confusion, fear, pain

Leaving one choiceless

In a state of knowing

Once the tangled webs are removed

Sticky with the sweat of dread

The agony of heartlessness

Impeding spirit flights of fancy

Too often roadblocked by doubt, hesitation

When two choose to

Or are chosen to be in love

After some time together

One finds need of a map

Where to go at the turn

When the dust comes off the older values

Things previously embraced, firmly implanted

Following a familiar sound

Calling, reaching for a new turn in the road

When one’s own choices

Or lack thereof

Are reflected in the eyes of a beloved

Unable or

Unwilling to unconditionally love

The very choices that once endeared them

The process of subtle judgment

Harmless, yet biting

In the realm of choice in freedom

Leaves one feeling either more or less free

New choices wash over the rough edges

Sandpaper on a wooden block of time

The foundation of a life in progress

Reaching for the texture of a substance of smoothness

Grabbing what lies ahead

In full view

Dare I speak of victimization

Question its reality

Blasphemous, I ponder

The fate of the poor souls

Learning horrific lessons beyond reach of reason

The edge of the human condition

Infliction, horror

One hardly chooses to bear

Terrible enough to bear in thought alone

Once it was spoken to me

That on a level beyond vision

Victims choose their fate

I say

A question best saved for some future sage

Whom I suspect will settle

The fact of our conception and our death

Explain our coping diseases

Understand our forays into madness

I engage with the wonder

Of creation by choice

Manifesting joy, treasures

Testing limits of palettes of thought

Mixing colors of desire with shades of need

Painting pictures of being

Of hope

Of choices to live

In ways of dreams

Stories embellished by magic

Imagination

Exclusively

For the highest good

Of those who choose to listen

Just Your Way

      01_sample.mp3

There was a time I didn’t know you
The funny way you showed you cared
You made it hard for me to love you
A fragile heart can find that hard to bear

Your will is made of steel and mine of iron
I had to fight to show you just how strong
You toughened me to help me, but I grew so hard
What love I found kept turning out all wrong

Chorus:

I know it’s hard for you to show the way you feel
And just as hard for you to say
I had to grow so fast to find a way to see
I dug so deep inside for love you seemed to hide
It took some years to see it’s just your way

Your life of work was what you had to offer
You thought that only hard-earned dreams came true
You built yourself a castle by the water
And I watched you find a peace you never knew

Chorus:

I know it’s hard for you to show the way you feel
And just as hard for you to say
Though we’ve had some battles that have torn me half apart
I never would give in until we both could win
Fighting off your heart was just your way

I know it’s hard for you to show the way you feel
And just as hard for you to say
The times that you were there for me as no one else could be
When I took too deep a fall, it was you I went to call
To be there when you’re needed was your way, it’s just…your way

More Than Remember

By Debra L. Alt & Jeff Fuller © 2008 Servethrusong (ASCAP)
Written for MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving)

      05_sample.mp3

He was a first son, and brother and a best friend
He always laughed and played so hard
So young we found each other, and his blue eyes held my secrets
A first and last sweetheart
His life had only just begun, a tender man just twenty-one
The vibrant life we’d always known, was soon to come undone

Three AM one morning, on a still night in December
A knock pierced all the sleepless sounds
A sergeant told the story that would soon become my terror
Then the strength that’s always held me, let me down
I couldn’t grasp what I was told, a car that crashed and lost control
How would I ever be consoled, my heart will not let go

Chorus:

More than remember, I’ll keep him alive
His memory’s forever, love that won’t die
More than remember, finding the ways
To honor our loved ones, make the roads safe
Do more than remember

Planting trees and wearing ribbons, placing wreaths along the highway
All we can do to help the spirit thrive
In sorrow we stand together, share our strengths with one another
So we can see the ways we do survive
I hope someday again I’ll find the light in me that used to shine
I miss your smile, your hand in mine, the one that’s left behind

Chorus:

More than remember, keep you alive
Memories forever, love that won’t die
More than remember, we’ll never abide
Careless offenders, guilty of crimes
More than remember, keep them alive
Memories forever, love that won’t die
More than remember, a tribute worthwhile
Spread the message, the call, to not drink and drive
Do more than remember.

As You Grow

      16_sample.mp3

As you grow I will be watching you and how you find your way
As you grow I will be loving you a little more each day
As you grow I will be teaching you the little that I know
Though the world may sometimes frighten
Each lesson can enlighten
Your eyes to always brighten
As you grow

As you grow I will be feeding you the things I think you need
As you grow I will find for you the places you should see
As you grow I’ll try to tell the truth as simply as I see
I will paint your world with laughter
With all the hope that I can gather
Reach for the heart of all that matters
As you grow

How I Wish That You Could See

© 2008 DebraSong Publishing

      05_sample.mp3

Verse:

My pregnant body showed its age
As I wrote to you on flowered pages
Long after you were born you nursed
On top of pillows you quenched your thirst
Content to know that just to be
Was just enough to fill your needs
If only that was something you could see

Chorus:

How I wish that you could see
How our life flowed so peacefully
How I wish that you could see
The way I held you sacredly

Verse:

We tore your home in half and how I tried
To grow a brand new one together
Went everywhere with you in tow
A little girl that could never know
How I smiled along with the other moms
In a world I never did belong
If only that was something you could see

Chorus:

How I wish that you could see
How I stroked you while asleep
How I wish that you could see
The dreams I held for you and me

Verse:

Grew so far apart we’re ripping at the seams
Traded all our time for cyber pages
You left for a house where the grass looked green
I helped you take away all the memories
Nights I roamed in your room with empty shelves
Stared at the walls for what they might tell
If only that was something you could see

Chorus:

How I wish that you could see
The things you want won’t fill your needs
How I wish that you could see
What your closed heart has done to me
Bridge:

If only you could feel the connection
Between your words and what they do
How I wish that you could take in my affection
And know how much there is to lose

Verse:

Searched so long to find you in the dark
Reached for you across some far-gone distance
You looked through me with vacant eyes
I stopped trying to compromise
On egg shells til I found a way
To heal your life and keep you safe
If only that was something you could see

Chorus:

How I wish that you could see
The source of happiness you seek
How I wish that you could see
What’s blind to you but clear to me
How I wish that you could see
Just how different life could be
How I wish that you could see
The love for you that lives in me
How I want for you
How I long for you
How I wish that you could see
